Postdoctoral Research Associates in Bio-inspired Membrane Systems
Chemical Sciences Division Oak Ridge National Laboratory Oak Ridge, Tennessee ORNL08-65-CSD Project Description: The integration of proteins with synthetic membranes will form the basis for a wide range of biomaterials with applications in energy conversion, drug delivery, nanomedicine etc. Understanding the weak intermolecular forces that govern supramolecular assembly of these structures will be crucial for the development of these materials. The Center for Structural Molecular Biology (CSMB) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory seeks a post-doctoral associate for a project on biomimetic conversion of solar energy to electrical or chemical energy. The CSMB is engaged in research related to protein structure and function using small angle scattering and crystallographic techniques and is responsible for managing the BioSANS instrument at ORNL. The successful candidate will join an interdisciplinary research team with expertise in photosynthesis, polymer chemistry, neutron science and organic photovoltaics. Qualifications: The position requires a Ph.D. in chemistry, biophysics or similar discipline related to the project. Expertise in polymer science and characterization using small-angle X-ray or neutron scattering techniques is highly desirable. The candidate is expected to publish research results in scientific journals, maintain a strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics and ensure compliance with environmental, safety, health and quality program requirements. Strong written and oral communication skills and the desire to work in a team environment on scientifically challenging problems are required.
