POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCH ASSOCIATE
Production, Breeding and Development of Improved Bioenergy Crops Department of Horticultural Science, NC State University, Mountain Horticultural Crops Research and Extension Center, Mills River, North Carolina SALARY: Salary commensurate with training and experience. DATE POSITION OPENS: As soon as a suitable candidate is found. This is a full-time position for one year with renewal for two additional years, contingent upon satisfactory performance. QUALIFICATIONS: A Ph.D. degree with an emphasis on plant breeding, crop production, or related disciplines. Experience in plant breeding, cytology, reproductive biology, production of bioenergy crops, plant fertility and nutrition, and applied biotechnology (PCR techniques, tissue culture, transformation, etc.) is desirable. MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES: The purpose of this position is to work as part of an interdisiplinary research team on the production, breeding, and development of improved energy crops with a particular emphasis on giant reed grass (Arundo donax). Crop improvement research will focus on developing crops with improved biomass yield, environmental adaptability (including greater cold hardiness), pest resistance, production efficiency, bioprocessing characteristics, and reduced environmental impacts (non-invasiveness). Crop production research will include greenhouse and field investigations of crop response to soil management practices and evaluation of production system sustainability. Responsibilities will include coordinating and overseeing selected projects, collaborating with fellow scientists and industry partners, completing literature reviews, expanding germplasm collections, coordinating and conducting breeding activities, design and execution of experiments including field trials, data collection and analysis, completing reports and grant proposals, and presentation and publication of results. Travel, including international, may be required. This position is located at NC State’s Mountain Horticultural Crops Research and Extension Center, in Mills River, North Carolina.
